Awards and Recognition: Distinguished Alumni Award Criteria
Award Description
The Distinguished Alumni Award is given to alumni of the College of Arts & Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington who, through exceptional achievement, has demonstrated the distinct principles derived from a liberal arts and sciences education.
Award Criteria
Ideal candidates must:
- Be a graduate of the College of Arts & Sciences at Indiana University, Bloomington.
- Have achieved significant recognition or accomplishment in their chosen field (business, academic, military/government, the arts, etc.), community service or University service. (Furthermore, nominees with a history of institutional commitment, i.e. working with alumni organizations, fund raising endeavors or personal financial support will be the strongest candidates.)
- Recipient must be able to accept the award in person at the College of Arts & Sciences Annual Recognition Banquet and be prepared to deliver an acceptance speech of approximately 500 words.
Nature of the Award
The award carries with it a
- Travel stipend of up to $1,000 for a roundtrip coach airfare and car service from Indianapolis airport to Bloomington
- Complimentary suite at the Indiana Memorial Union
- Framed certificate that will match the award winner’s diploma
- 8 complimentary banquet tickets
Nomination Guidelines/Format
The application process is simple and open to all. We encourage you to nominate someone you know for this honor. Nominators should submit the following:
- Electronic nominations (strongly encouraged)
- Send an e-mail to vcloe@indiana.edu with the following information:
- An e-mail establishing the candidate’s credentials in a clear and concise manner
- Official DAA nomination form
- Supporting documentation (i.e. candidate’s cv/resume, letters of support, newspaper clippings, company press releases, etc.)
- Send an e-mail to vcloe@indiana.edu with the following information:
- Paper nominations must include
- A letter establishing the candidate’s credentials in a clear and concise manner
- Official DAA nomination form
- Supporting documentation (i.e. candidate’s cv/resume, letters of support, newspaper clippings, company press releases, etc.)
- Nominations must be RECEIVED by 2nd Monday in January of Award Year. Nominations received after the deadline is not assured complete consideration.
Exclusions from Eligibility:
Members of the College of Arts & Sciences Alumni Board, current faculty and staff of the College of Arts & Sciences at Indiana University are not eligible to receive this award. The College of Arts & Sciences Alumni Association Board reserves the right to reassign categories of nomination if deemed necessary.

Nominations must be RECEIVED by the 2ND MONDAY IN JANUARY OF AWARD YEAR to be eligible.
Screening/Selection
- Eligible nominations are screened and selected by the College of Arts & Sciences Alumni Board. Award selections will be made in mid- to late-February.
- Those candidates who are offered the award but are unable to accept it in the current year will automatically be offered the award for the following year.
- Nominees not selected will be held over for reconsideration for two additional years.
- If necessary, rollover nominations must be modified to fit within current guidelines/award criteria.
Notification
- Immediately upon selection, the award winner, nominator(s) and chair of the award winner’s department will be notified by the College of Arts & Sciences Dean.
- Award notifications will be made in late February to early March. Recipient names will be made public after the recipient has accepted the award.
