Buildings
Indiana University in Bloomington has embarked upon an ambitious building program to create much-needed space for interdisciplinary research in the sciences. The recently completed Simon Hall opened in the fall of 2008 and was the first new free-standing science building at IU in over 40 years. This magnificent new multidisciplinary science building won high honors in R&D Magazine's 2008 "Lab of the Year," an architecture competition for research facilities. The addition of this new science building has already had a profound effect on the research enterprise at IU, and has given us a distinct advantage in recruiting some of the most talented faculty and grad students.
We now look forward to the opening of the second multidisciplinary science building (MSB-2) in the fall of 2009. This new building will offer state-of-the-art labs and facilities for scientists addressing multidisciplinary problems in neuroscience and environmental science.
Lastly, we are in the midst of planning the new International Studies Building to house most of the area studies programs, all the foreign language departments, Second Language Studies, Comparative Literature, and African-American and African Diaspora Studies. This building will symbolize IU’s long-standing commitment to foreign languages and cultures and will also offer tremendous opportunities for innovative teaching, research, and outreach.
