Michael T. MartinMichael T. Martin, African American and African Diaspora Studies and director of the Black Film Center/Archive, served as president of the "Jury officiel DIASPORA" for the 2009 edition of FESPACO [Festival Panafricain du Cinema et de la Television de Quagadougou) held during the first week of March in Burkina Faso.

Black CameraBlack Camera, an international journal of the Black Film Center/Archive, will now be published in partnership with Indiana University Press. Edited by Michael T. Martin, Black Camera is devoted to the study of the black cinematic experience and is the only scholarly film journal of its kind in the United States. Its aims are to document, invigorate research and study of black filmmaking as an art form, cultural and political practice, and historical activity; engage in conversation with other cinematic traditions, movements and practices in world cinema; stimulate new, and refresh traditional, theoretical and analytical perspectives; disseminate research to enhance the teaching of black film; and serve as a depository and showcase for black artistic and intellectual achievement.

Andrea CiccarelliAndrea Ciccarelli, French and Italian and director of the College Arts and Humanities Institute, was invited to give the inaugural lesson of the PhD program in the Humanities at the University of Turin in Italy. Antonio C. VittiAntonio Vitti, French and Italian, has published The Films of Gianni Amelio (Pesaro: Metauro Edizioni, 2009), a monograph on the award-winning Italian director whose films include “Il ladro di bambini,” “Lamerica,” and “La Stella che non c'è.”

Sarah BurnsSarah Burns, Ruth N. Halls Professor of Fine Arts and professor of American Art, received a 2008-2009 fellowship in Art History from the Terra Foundation for American Art at the Newberry Library in Chicago. She was also a senior scholar in a Terra Summer Residency at the Musée D’Art Américain in Giverny, France, during the summer of 2008.

Michelle FacosIn March, Michelle Facos, History of Art, delivered a lecture to the Print and Drawings Club of the Art Institute of Chicago in connection with the Edvard Munch exhibition “Nature and Nation in Symbolist Art.” The previous month, she gave a lecture on “Jewish Contributions to the Promotion of Swedish National Identity, Circa 1900,” at Pennsylvania State University.

Christiane Jacqueline GruberChristiane Gruber, History of Art, has recently received several grants, including Grant-in-Aid, a Travel and Research Grant from the College Arts and Humanities Institute, and an OVPIA Overseas Research Grant. She also continues to serve as managing director and senior fellow of an international research project on texts and images of the Prophet Muhammad, funded by a five-year (2008-2012) grant administered by the Max Planck Foundation

The City of Bloomington’s Human Rights Commission (BHRC) named Voices and Visions: Islam and Muslims From A Global Perspective as the organizational recipient of its 10th annual Human Rights Awards. The Voices and Visions project was honored for its ongoing efforts to address issues relating to Muslim and Non-Muslim relations in a balanced, sensitive and scholarly manner. Along with producing 60 podcasts in partnership with WFIU, the organization promotes intercultural dialogue through community events, which have included a month-long arts exhibit at the John Waldron Arts Center, film festivals and panel discussions. Voices and Visions also developed a program entitled “Uncovering Islam: Reporting, Representing and Responsibility,” in collaboration with Indiana University’s Center for the Study of Global Change, African Studies Program, East Asian Studies Center, Inner Asian and Uralic National Resources Center, Russian and Eastern European Institute, West European Studies and the Center for International Business Education and Research.
