Denis Sinor, distinguished professor emeritus of Central Eurasian Studies, received the IU President’s Medal of Excellence from IU President Michael McRobbie in September 2008.
Paul Newman, distinguished professor emeritus of Linguistics and adjunct professor of Anthropology and of Law, was an invited plenary speaker at a conference on Nominal and Verbal Plurality held in Paris. He was named to the Senior Fulbright Specialists' roster in law, and has been invited to serve on the Cultural Anthropology & Linguistics panel of the 2009 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program. He has also been named Special Counsel to the Linguistic Society of America.
Noretta Koertge, professor emerita of History and Philosophy of Science, is editor in chief of the multi-volume New Dictionary of Scientific Biography (Charles Scriber and Sons, 2007).
Peter Bondanella, distinguished professor emeritus of Comparative Literature, Film Studies and Italian, was awarded a Mellon Emeritus Fellowship for work on Federico Fellini's dream notebooks. The award will provide not only travel money for the research but almost $12,000 for library acquisitions on Italian cinema for the Wells and Lilly libraries.
William Itter, Fine Arts, was awarded a Retired Faculty Grant-In-Aid of Research and Creative Activity in October 2008. The financial support will be for preparations for the School Of Fine Arts William Itter retrospective exhibition of paintings and drawings on view from October to November 2009. The Retired Faculty grants are for a two year period.
