DISCUSSION
The Committee continued discussion of mathematics requirements:
  • Dean Smith proposed changing the SAT score needed to satisfy the fundamental skill in mathematics requirement from 650 to 600. After discussion, the Committee voted (3 in favor of the proposal; 6 against; 1 abstention).
  • A preliminary draft of a questionnaire (to be sent to chairs, directors of undergraduate studies, and advisors) was discussed. Questions will address quantitative reasoning, computational, and mathematics skills needed within majors and for all undergraduates in the College. Another draft will be discussed at the next meeting.
The Committee briefly discussed the proposal for a minor in African Languages and approved the proposal (with one abstention). Since this is an optional minor within the College, no further approval is necessary, and the minor will be available to students once it has been published in June 2004.

The minutes of the April 8, 2003 meeting were approved.

The Committee continued the discussion of the development of eportfolios for undergraduate students, with examples from websites of institutions that currently have eportfolios. Dean Smith will appoint a task force to develop a matrix of educational goals to be used for the eportfolio development for the College. The task force will include members from CUE, undergraduate advisors, and staff from the Arts and Sciences Placement Office and from the Dean's Office.

There will be one more meeting this semester.
