DISCUSSION
Minutes The minutes of the October 11, 2003 meeting were approved.
History Major The Committee briefly discussed the proposal for changes in the major in History. Approved
unanimously.
HPER Minor in Fundraising and Resource Development The Committee discussed whether or not this HPER minor
could be allowed on the transcripts of students in the College. C. Hoff will convey comments from the
Committee to HPER and the issue will be brought back to the Committee at a future meeting.
General Education issues Dean Larson gave a brief update of campus-wide discussions of general education
issues. Although the topic might be discussed further in the future, it is not moving rapidly forward at
this time.
Outside Hours and Certification in Education The Committee discussed the number of outside hours that could
be included within the minimum 122 total hours required for bachelor's degrees in the College. After
looking at other programs across schools and at recent changes that now require additional professional
courses in the School of Education for certification, the Committee affirmed that the current policy is
appropriate:
for students in the College who are also seeking teacher certification, up to 29 outside hours chosen from
courses required for teacher certification can be included in the 122 hour minimum. Ten affirmative votes/
one opposed.
The Committee members agreed that the College should make sure that advisors and students are aware of this
special allowance for students completing Teacher Certification requirements.
The next meeting is scheduled for early in the spring semester 2004 in Kirkwood Hall 007.
