College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes
December 7th, 2009
Present: Jeffrey Hart (chair), Michael Alexeev, Laurel Cornell, Melissa Dinverno, John Lucaites (recorder), Bogdan Dragnea, and Maxine Walker.
The meeting began at 4:00 p.m. Minutes for the previous meeting were distributed, read, and approved.
The committee reviewed a ten year survey of market share on the IUB campus (1999-2009) as part of its continuing interest in understanding COAS’s current budget situation in the context of the overall campus financial picture.
The committee discussed the announcement reported in the Bloomington HT of the Board of Trustee’s decision to extend the contract of President McRobbie until 2017. The discussion focused on whether or not the extension had been preceded by a review of the president and, if so, whether or not College faculty had been invited to offer any input. The committee intends to look further into the matter.
Two members of the committee attended the interviews for the Vice President of Research position (Dr. Jose, State U. of New York: Buffalo, and Dr. Pazzani – Rutgers) and reported their impressions of the candidates. A question had been raised concerning whether or not the candidates had strong enough backgrounds or knowledge to represent the humanities adequately. The answer seems to be that they do.
Dean Bertenthal joined the meeting at 4:35 p.m. He discussed the recent announcement by Gov. Daniels of an additional 150 million dollar cut in state appropriations to higher education, indicating that we will not know the full effect of this on the College or the IU campus until after the first of the year. He also shared his impressions of the two candidates for the Vice President of Research position and a general discussion of their credentials ensued.
The meeting adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
