Undergraduate Curricular Information

This site offers information regarding how faculty and departments in the College of Arts and Sciences can go about revising existing courses and degree programs and offering new ones. It also describes the process for requesting that a particular course receive various kinds of credit (Distribution, Culture Studies, Intensive Writing, Topics). Finally, it provides copies of relevant forms and links to helpful Web sites. More detailed information on some of these topics can be found in the 2008–2010 Bulletin of the College of Arts and Sciences and its Supplement (published in June 2009). If you have any questions, please contact jhacker @ indiana.edu (June Hacker) , the Undergraduate Curriculum Coordinator.

This site does not cover anything related to the General Education Curriculum that goes into effect in the fall of 2011. Nor does it discuss Themester, an exciting new initiative that, each fall, allows students and faculty to engage, both inside and outside of the classroom, in a campus-wide      discussion of a pre-selected, interdisciplinary topic. The above Web site includes information regarding how to propose courses for Themester.

Curricular Proposals

The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and members of  CUE review proposals for new undergraduate degree objectives, including majors, minors, certificates, and degrees, as well as proposals for revisions of existing degree objectives.  When approved by the College, these proposals are forwarded to the Campus Curriculum Committee for review and approval.  Most approved proposals are then considered by the Academic Leadership Council of the IU campuses;  for majors, degrees, and certificates requiring 30 or more credit hours, the Indiana Higher Education Commission also considers the degree objective for approval. All approved  degree objectives are ultimately considered by the IU Board of Trustees.

New Courses/ Revised Courses

All undergraduate course proposals are reviewed by the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education  or assistant academic deans.  After approval, such courses are submitted to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education for review for listing on the undergraduate curriculum remonstrance list, which circulates to all schools at IUB and other IU campuses.

(We hope soon for the university’s electronic system to be up and running sometime this academic year, replacing the current paper process for new undergraduate course and undergraduate course change requests.)
