Balloon Launch Glider / Wright Stuff

Question: What are the dimensions of Gladstein Fieldhouse?

Answer: The Gladstein Fieldhouse has an elevated track that cannot be removed.  Therefore, there are obstacles that you need to be aware of.  In the photos below, there are some obstacles that you will see that WILL be removed prior to competition day such as the flags hanging from the ceiling, the high jump bar & pit, and the hurdles.  The elevated runway, long jump sand pit, and the elevated track will NOT be removed.  I hope these photos help you plan your flights accordingly.

Question:  If the National Science Olympiad Organization institutes a recommended rule change to Balloon Launch Glider concerning platforms, perches or kinetic launching methods, will this rule go into effect for Indiana competitions? If so, when will the change take place?

Answer: Indiana WILL NOT change the current rules for Balloon Launch Glider concerning launch methods as stated in the 2007-2008 Coaches Manual and Rules.  The Indiana State Competition will adhere to the rules as published. The Indiana Science Olympiad Executive Board approves this choice to not change this rule.

Issue: As of March 1, 2008, the national office for Science Olympiad began attempts to modify this published rule, item e, under THE COMPETITION Section of the current BALLOON LAUNCH GLIDER Rules. This rule currently states, “At the State and National level: Teams must provide their own Balloon Launching Rig (inflated balloon, line(s) and launching perch such as pleated paper or balsa platform).”

The only intent of this rule is to have all teams bring their own balloons with its launching rig to the state and national competitions. In no way does this restrict the design and application of any team’s glider launch platform/rig.
