Diversity & Inclusion

Diversity in the College of Arts & Sciences

The College values diversity, equity, and inclusion as a core strength and essential element in the success of its educational mission. We are committed to:

  • Ensuring equity and access across the broad range of our research, teaching, and co-curricular activities;
  • Maintaining a culture in which all students, faculty, and staff feel welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability status, socioeconomic status, immigration status, and other forms of difference, and;
  • Valuing myriad and differing intellectual contributions, political and ideological views, and lived experiences for their capacity to enrich the learning process and contribute to the College’s and the university’s success.

We believe that tangible educational, organizational, and personal benefits result from applying a critical lens to ourselves and our environment, individually and collectively examining our biases, assumptions, and worldviews, and challenging and mitigating structural inequities. Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is grounded in our aspiration to cultivate intellectual rigor and curiosity among our students and to prepare them to thrive in and contribute to a globally diverse, complex, and interconnected world.

The Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs, or OVPDEMA, is an indispensable clearinghouse. It can be your springboard to finding academic and career support. For example, every year, OVPDEMA offers 12,000 mentoring and tutoring sessions. Also through OVPDEMA, you can seek out financial support and scholarships.

If you need to request educational accommodations and assistance, you can find disability services through IU's Division of Student Affairs.

IU is committed to supporting students and has many resources available to assist you. Once you enroll at IU, you will gain instant online access to all sorts of student services simply by logging in to Student Central with your user name and password. You can report an incident of discrimination, harassment, hate or retaliation through the Division of Student Affairs. You can also report sexual misconduct through the Office of Student Welfare.

To learn about IU's policies on such issues as recruitment, tenure, or admissions, the University Policies website is helpful. The Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion focuses on student, faculty, and institutional initiatives relating to recruitment, retention, and climate on our campus.

IU’s Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning provides expertise to enable innovation in curricula, to implement effective pedagogies, and to enhance student engagement.

The same faculty portal that you’ll enter to check your e-mail or submit student grades will also enable you to report bias incidents or sexual misconduct.
