Language of instruction:

German and English

Students should have at least a B2 (high intermediate) on the CEFRL. A student who has successfully completed one 300-level class is likely to be at a B1 or B2 level.

IU exchange students will take a two-week intensive German language course in Bayreuth before the beginning of classes.

Grades + Transcripts:

UBT uses a 1-6 grading level (1.0 to 1.5 is excellent). UBT will provide a transcript and at the student’s request, IU departments will review courses to determine how they will apply to your degree. Please note that IU does not accept Pass/Fail.

Academic calendar:

Spring semester:  April 25 – July 29, 2022

Students should plan to arrive in Germany between April 1 and 10 for the German language course and orientation.

There is not set a week for examination, as this depends on the courses you take. Most exams take place in the three weeks after the end of the lecture period and thus should be finished by August 19, 2022.

This exchange program is available for spring semesters only. Students will not be able to study at UBT in the fall.

Traveling to & living in Germany

Student visa information:

U.S. citizens do not need a student visa, but they will need to apply for a German residence permit at the respective Foreigners’ Registration Office in Germany.

Visa information 

Air travel:

Exchange students will be responsible for arranging and purchasing their own round-trip international airline tickets for dates appropriate for the term at the host university. Exchange students should only purchase tickets once UBT has confirmed the dates of arrival. Students who are nominated for the exchange are eligible for a travel grant from College International.

Nearest international airport: Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) or Munich Airport (MUC)


Studentenwerk Oberfranken manages student dorms on and off campus. Students admitted to the University of Bayreuth can apply for a room in the student dorms.

Pre-departure orientation: 

College International staff will provide an orientation near the end of the fall semester to help students prepare for their programs. Nominated students will also be invited to enroll in the one-credit “GLLC-G 291 Study Abroad: Before You Go” for the second eight weeks term.

Arrival information:

UBT provides an orientation welcome week for all exchange students two weeks before the beginning of classes.

A Buddy program is available for international students to connect with current UBT students.

Estimated costs per semester:

  • Tuition: IU Tuition
  • Housing (dormitory or apartment, shared or private): $1,000-3,000
  • Food and incidentals: $1,500-2,000
  • Two-week intensive German course: $300
  • UBT Semester fee: $130
  • OVST administrative fee: $238

    Plus insurance, residence permit, airfare

Application information

Student eligibility requirements:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's degree within the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Have completed a minimum of one year at IUB prior to enrolling abroad
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above (with a 3.3. GPA in German coursework)
  • Be enrolled in at least one course in Germanic Studies during the semester before departure (it is recommended that a student have completed G330, G332 or G334)

Students must be nominated to UBT by the College International Office.

  • Complete the form and upload a statement of intent.
  •  Send the recommendation form link to the person who will supply a reference for you. It must be submitted by the application deadline.
  • College International staff will conduct interviews with select students (semi-finalists) to determine their suitability and preparedness for the exchange. Students must come to the interview prepared with a list of prospective courses they might like to take abroad.
  • College International will nominate finalists to UMA. Upon acceptance, UMA will contact students to invite them to apply for admission. An academic transcript and copy of your passport will be required at this point.
