Theatre & Drama - Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.)

Indiana University’s Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance is consistently ranked as one of the top theatre schools in the nation and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and University Resident Theatre Association (URTA). The department believes that theatrical productions and classroom study are of equal importance, so it gives students broad experience in both.

The department’s three-year M.F.A. program is rigorous and selective. It is structured for students who intend to pursue a professional career in theatre as either a scholar or an artist. At any given time, the department has roughly 55 graduate students and approximately 250 undergraduate majors.

Students spend their three years in the program intensively honing their craft and advancing their talents, becoming both fluent and focused as theatre arts professionals, and also make critical connections with others in the performing arts. Their credentials confer authority—the department’s reputation for scholarly excellence and high artistic standards will serve them well in a variety of careers.

Alumni have gone on to hold key positions in hundreds of universities and professional theatres throughout the nation. They also excel in related professions in stage, film, and television.
