Student academic appointments

Student academic appointments are part-time positions that require 15–20 hours of work per week. These positions include associate instructors, faculty assistants, graduate assistants, and research assistants. The IU GradGrants Center maintains a list of student academic appointment vacancies on its website.

Associate instructors are student academic appointees who engage in teaching activity. The College provides a variety of support and resources to help its associate instructors become effective teachers.

In addition to student academic appointments, financial support is available to graduate students in the form of fellowships or other awards. Fellowships carry no specific job responsibilities; the only requirement is that you continue to make good progress toward your degree. Other types of awards include merit and competition provided supplemental fellowships, research grants, and travel grants.

The College Graduate Office administers several fellowships and awards for continuing graduate students. Other fellowships and awards are available to graduate students from IU and from external sources. The IU Graduate School Bloomington maintains a list of IU and external fellowships and awards on its website.

We strongly encourage graduate students to apply for external fellowships and awards. External sources of funding provide financial support and are considered important indicators of prestige in your field. If you're considering applying for such awards, contact the College Graduate Office to discuss fee remissions or other benefits that may be available to supplement such awards.
