Academic Standing

You are in Good Academic Standing when:

• your term grade point average (GPA) is at least 2.000, and
• your cumulative GPA and major GPA are at least 2.000
• you are making adequate progress toward your major and degree requirements

If you are in Good Academic Standing, your record will be reviewed to determine whether you qualify for the Executive Dean’s List for that term.

To be eligible for the Executive Dean’s List, you must:

• have been pursuing an undergraduate degree in the College of Arts and Sciences as of the end of the last day of classes
• have completed at least 12 credit hours in courses that are designated by the College as eligible to count toward a degree and are assigned a regular (A-F) letter grade*
• have earned a term GPA of 3.700 or higher

*Only courses completed through the Indiana University Bloomington campus are be considered for the Executive Dean’s List.

You are on Academic Watch when:

• your most recent term GPA is above 0.000, but below 2.000, or
• your major GPA is below 2.000

If you are on Academic Watch, you must meet with your academic advisor. During this meeting you should ask your advisor to help you review your schedule to see if adjusting the number of credit hours or the sequencing of your classes would help you return to good academic standing. If you have repeated one or more courses in your major, you may also want to consider whether a major change is advised. If you are not registered for classes during the next academic term, the meeting with your academic advisor must take place before you are able to register. Your advisor will be able to release lift the registration hold that accompanies Academic Watch status.

You are on Academic Alert when:

• your cumulative GPA is below 2.000, or
• you were on Academic Alert or Academic Watch for your previous term of enrollment and you failed to return to Good Academic Standing, or
• there are significant concerns about your ability to complete your major or degree requirements

Note: If you meet the criteria for both Academic Watch and Alert, you will be placed on Academic Alert.

If you are on Academic Alert, you must meet with a member of the College Student Success team. At this meeting you will discuss the factors that have impacted your academic performance along with strategic actions you can take to protect your GPA so that you can return to Good Academic Standing. You may be asked to modify your schedule of classes and/or to consider alternative majors or degree paths. If you are not registered for classes during the next academic term, the meeting with the Student Success team advisor must take place before you are able to register.

You are academically dismissed when you fail to make adequate progress toward your degree. You are automatically dismissed when:

• Your academic standing for the previous term of enrollment is Academic Alert, and
• Your term GPA is below 2.000, and
• Your cumulative GPA is below 2.000

Regardless of prior academic standing, you may be dismissed if your academic record reveals a failure to make adequate progress toward completion of your major or degree. If you are academically dismissed, all enrollment for future terms will be cancelled. Students dismissed from the College of Arts and Sciences may also be dismissed from IU Bloomington.
