Distinguished Alumni Scholar Nomination Form

Submit a nomination for the College's Distinguished Alumni Scholar Award

The College of Arts and Sciences is excited to solicit nominations for our new Distinguished Alumni Scholar Award. This alumni recognition honors graduates of the College who, as faculty members at other colleges and universities, have advanced their fields through exceptional research, scholarship, creative activity, and/or teaching.

While the College's general Distinguished Alumni Award celebrates exemplary alumni whose careers have had a broader societal impact, the Distinguished Alumni Scholar Award celebrates alumni who have had a particular impact on their given academic field.

This new alumni recognition will be bestowed at various times throughout each academic year, but the cut-off for consideration during any given year is February 28. All faculty members are encouraged to submit nominations, but they must have the support of their unit's leadership. Award recipients are selected by Executive Dean Rick Van Kooten and a faculty committee.

Use the form below to nominate alumni. If you have any questions, please contact the College's Director of Alumni Engagement Vanessa Cloe at vcloe@iu.edu or 812-855-8891.

Candidates must:

  • Have earned an undergraduate or graduate degree from the College of Arts and Sciences;
  • Have demonstrated outstanding achievement in research, scholarship, creative activity, and/or teaching in their field;
  • Be emeritus, tenured, or tenure-track faculty members at a college or university, either domestically or abroad;
  • Not currently be a member of the Indiana University faculty or staff, nor the Indiana University Board of Trustees.

Self-nominations are not accepted. The College reserves the right to reassign nomination categories if deemed necessary.

Ideally, letters of nomination will include:

  • A succinct description of the nominee’s major scholarly, scientific, and/or creative contributions;
  • An explanation of the ways in which the nominee’s work has impacted their field or discipline at large;
  • Context, if necessary, about the nominee’s professional achievements and/or breakthroughs;
  • Any additional indications of merit, including factors that may be difficult to quantify (reputation, renown, impact on students, etc.).

Eligible nominations are screened and awardees are selected by Executive Dean Rick Van Kooten and a faculty committee. Award selections are made in late June. Nominees not selected will be held over for reconsideration for two additional years. If necessary, rollover nominations must be modified to fit within current guidelines and award criteria.
