The Practicum in College Teaching domain requires that students gain hands-on experience in a supervised college teaching setting. Most students in the practicum will teach a course, section, workshop, guest lecture, or other significant learning activity in their disciplinary department but other hands-on teaching activities can satisfy this requirement. Some departments offer courses that can be used to satisfy this requirement. Alternatively, students can secure the written agreement of a faculty member to serve as mentor for the practicum and notify a certificate program co-director. At the conclusion of the practicum, students will be expected to present documentation of their teaching (e.g., syllabus, course policies, student evaluations, observation of teaching, teaching reflection or rationale).

Work in this domain can be undertaken in the context of a formal course on research or scholarship in College teaching or through an independent research/study arrangement. Examples of work that would satisfy this requirement include a capstone project on a pedagogical topic, a self-directed sequence of intensive workshops on a topic, engagement in and reflection on professional development related to college teaching and learning, and a scholarship of teaching and learning project. If satisfied through an independent research/study course, the project must be supervised by a faculty member with expertise in the pedagogical topic of interest. Whether conducted through a formal course or an independent research/study arrangement, projects must be pre-approved by a co-director of the certificate program based on a written document in which students describe the project and articulate its expected learning outcomes.
