Graduate Area Certificate in College Pedagogy

Orientation to the skills, theories, traditions, and innovations of college teaching are essential to the preparation of future college faculty.  The Certificate in College Pedagogy offers IUB graduate students in any field of study the opportunity to develop and document their teaching accomplishments.  The certificate is designed to complement their field-based research with both disciplinary and transferable practices in teaching. By combining academic standards, methods, and literatures with practical experience, IU graduate students will be prepared to be outstanding higher education teachers, job candidates, and future faculty members.

Graduate students

Graduate students will find the Certificate in College Pedagogy of particular interest for careers in institutions that value outstanding teaching or in highly competitive fields. It provides a skill set highly valued by academic employers nationwide. The goal is to foster a host of IU graduates who are uniquely prepared to be both outstanding disciplinary experts and outstanding college teachers. The certification of college teaching is especially important given the fierce competition nationally for faculty positions. The certificate allows graduate student job candidates to document and discuss their teaching in theory-framed and evidence-based terms. Moreover, it equips them to get off to a quick start in teaching in the early tenure years, leaving more time in that valuable period to publish. The certificate program distinguishes IU graduates from competitors on the job market: at other top-tier universities, certificates in college teaching are uncommon and usually rely on teaching center workshops rather than faculty expertise.

Departments

Departments at IU can augment their current offerings in pedagogy by coordinating with the Certificate Program. IU aims to set a new standard for academic preparation for college teaching by integrating departmental training, inter-disciplinary seminars, graduate-level reading and research, and practica. The School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences

The School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences co-sponsor the certificate, which is housed administratively in the College of Arts and Sciences and overseen by two co-directors, one from each sponsoring unit.
